The intricately woven world of home makers had been kept veiled for centuries. Not intentionally, but not many had tried to peek into this secret chamber of arranged pantries, explorative recipes, threaded crochets, unconditional nurturing and the plethora of wisdom on creating a home. The concept of a homebody has always been a subject of oppression and service. The world for decades had been geared with a motive of fast growth that employs and celebrates the productive work life spent outside the cocoon. But, for once, when the veil is finally moved a bit, allowing for a peek inside the world of a homebody, the world isn’t the least disappointed.
Popularly called ‘The Silent Vlogs’, the South Korean vloggers brought to the world a view into their lifestyle of slow leaving and brewing the aroma of the calming routines that comes with it.
1.Haegreendal
Kim sang- mi, the 34-year-old youtuber is all about her perfectly timed shots of blooming spring, sizzling soups, late night conversations and messily scribbled drawings of her 4-year-old whom the community adoringly calls as the little captain, all corded together into one heartwarming story saying that often carries two or three simple lessons. Her videos like “About things that shall pass”, “Things you can only do at this moment”, are nothing less than the cinematic version of one of the most welcomed genres of books, the light hearted story telling. An independent freelance illustrator herself, and a mother of one, sang- mi’s perspective of motherhood is more of free- will and letting the child to bloom in his/her own pace. Often in her vlogs, little captain is sighted with messily scribbled drawings for his mother, taking a walk with her, or even participating in the preparation of recipes, making his own Anpanman from the small dough balls, often reflecting a world far from the working parents with no time left for children.
With nearly 2Million subscribers, Kim’s channel is one of the most popular of its kind. A genre of videography focusing on the simple pleasures of keeping clean, organized and food filled home.
Among a generation repelling from the concept of family life, and home, Kim’s perspective of motherhood, partnership, and simple living routines is a revival of the concept of a healthy home.
2.Seuddu
The channel of Bak Hae-ri, a freelance videographer is profoundly welcomed among the young single women. Her book “23, and I live alone”, a concise written work of her take on living alone is what can be witnessed through her recording lens. Although a homebody, her videos also capture her life as an active creator, and mentor who occasionally conducts classes online on video capturing and editing. In a series of videos, her shots include her own isolated world of making food, doing chores and playing with her dog, or even travelling alone, all in enjoying her own company. In one of her Q and A videos, her take on strained relationship with parents, where she shares her own relationship with her mother, she points out about maintaining a healthy space, and slowly letting the space to close on its own are some of the aspects od adulting life that are not spoken out often. Although family is important, a forced relationship only gets suffocating, so it is indeed important let it come around on its own. Ms. Bak’s content appeals to women in the so called sampo generation, the growing number of young adults who reject the three pillars of adult like in Korean society- courtship, marriage and children in favor of independence and financial freedom.
Ania, a nurse from Philippines found hae-ri’s channel during the pandemic because of a YouTube recommendation. She was drawn in by the way mundane activities like cooking and cleaning were given a cinematic treatment. “It showed me that one can be happy staying at home, doing even mundane things, just appreciating everyday life. I do not joke when I say she is changing the world – a woman being happy enjoying a cold beer, while sitting with her dog and simply reading – that’s the inspiration many of us need” says Ania.
Although portraying the same genre of content of silent vlogs, just two of such many female content creators who record their own way of living already provides a reflection of two contrasting worlds. A healthy family life, and a gloriously independent, single life. This highlights the point that no matter what a woman chooses, be it a corporate life or a home life, that both career choices should be appreciated.
