Garima, a visually impaired nine-year-old from Navdi village in Haryana’s Mahendergarh district, proved that determination and courage could lead to extraordinary achievements. This january, she was honored with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar by President Droupadi Murmu for her incredible initiative, "Sakshar Pathshala," which connected over 1,000 students to education.

This award was one of the highest recognitions for children in India, given to those aged 5 to 18 for achievements in fields like social service, bravery, art, culture, and sports. Garima was among 19 young achievers nationwide and the only recipient from Haryana that year.

Despite being visually impaired, Garima’s vision for change had been crystal clear. Inspired by the challenges she faced in her early education, she decided to make a difference for other kids who lacked opportunities. Through her Sakshar Pathshala initiative, she worked tirelessly to spread awareness about the importance of education, especially in slums and underprivileged areas.

“Education is a basic right and a tool for progress,” Garima had said. She firmly believed that every child deserved access to learning to improve not just their lives but also contribute to the nation’s growth.

Garima’s efforts made her a role model, not only for her peers but also for her community. Her father, who was a teacher, had been a huge inspiration for her. Like him, she dreamed of becoming a teacher and helping society through education.

The Haryana government supported several initiatives to ensure children weren’t excluded from education, and Garima’s work became a powerful example of how such efforts could make a real difference.
