India emerged victorious in the first-ever Under-19 Women’s Asia Cup 2024, defeating Bangladesh by 41 runs in a thrilling final at the Bayuemas Oval. Under the leadership of Niki Prasad, the team delivered a stellar performance, with Gongadi Trisha’s crucial half-century and an exceptional bowling display leading the charge.

After being invited to bat first, India posted a total of 117 for seven in their allotted 20 overs. While most batters struggled to make an impact, opener Gongadi Trisha stood firm. She scored a composed 52 off 47 balls, laced with five boundaries and two sixes, forming the backbone of India’s innings.

Captain Niki Prasad chipped in with a steady knock but fell short of making a significant score. Mithila Vinod added late momentum with a brisk 17 off 12 deliveries. For Bangladesh, pacer Farjana Easmin was the standout performer, picking up four wickets for 31 runs in her four overs. Nishita Akter Nishi supported with two crucial wickets, keeping India from dominating.

Chasing 118, Bangladesh faltered early as Indian bowlers made inroads. Openers Mosammat Eva and Sumaiya Akhter were dismissed cheaply, putting pressure on the middle order. Fahomida Choya (18) and Juairiya Ferdous (22) attempted to stabilize the innings, but their efforts were short-lived.

Sonam Yadav and Parunika Sisodia claimed two wickets each, but it was Aayushi Shukla who stole the spotlight. The tournament’s highest wicket-taker delivered a game-changing spell, finishing with figures of 3.3-0-17-3. Bangladesh suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their last seven wickets for just 21 runs in 40 balls. VJ Joshitha’s early dismissal of Eva set the tone for India’s dominant display.

India’s comprehensive performance in the final highlights the depth and skill of their young talent. Gongadi Trisha, a key player in India’s Women’s T20 World Cup victory last year, once again showcased her ability to deliver in crucial matches.

With this victory, India has added another accolade to their growing list of achievements in women’s cricket. As they prepare for the U-19 Women’s World Cup next year, this win will serve as a confidence booster for the team.
